Spatial and temporal variations of reproduction variables the two cyclopoid copepods Oithona nana Giesbrecht, 1893 similis Claus, 1866 were evaluated monthly from September 2007 to August 2008 in four ponds at different salinities solar saltern Sfax, Tunisia, under hypersaline conditions. The findings showed that these species, particularly ovigerous females, was positively correlated with Diatomeae, negatively salinity. egg production rate (EPR), diameter, clutch size, as well cephalothorax length mature all Diatomeae. existing gradient, EPR decreased 4.7 0.39 3.2 0.13 eggs female-1 day-1 5.19 0.46 3.66 0.05 for similis, respectively, this could mainly be attributed positive relationship between Diatomeae traits shows, may a vital component diet investigated species. reduction body size along demonstrates such character due network causes, related confinement not only

Temperature affects respiration rate of Oithona similis

Oithona spp. is considered the most abundant and ubiquitous copepod genus in the marine environment, often outnumbering calanoid copepods throughout the year. Previous studies have argued that one of the reasons for such success is that the respiration rate of Oithona spp. is insensitive to temperature changes and lower than in calanoids. However, comprehensive data on the thermal biology of th...

On the uncertainty beneath the name Oithona similis Claus, 1866 (Copepoda, Cyclopoida)

The marine cyclopoid Oithona similis sensu lato Claus, 1866, is considered to be one of the most abundant and ubiquitous copepods in the world. However, its minimal original diagnosis and the unclear connection with its (subjective) senior synonym Oithona helgolandica Claus, 1863, may have caused frequent misidentification of the species. Consequently, it seems possible that several closely rel...

Coprorhexy, coprophagy, and coprochaly in the copepods Calanus helgolandicus, Pseudocalanus elongatus, and Oithona similis

Studies of fecal pellet flux show that a large percentage of pellets produced in the upper ocean is degraded within the surface waters. It is therefore important to investigate these degradation mechanisms to understand the role of fecal pellets in the oceanic carbon cycle. Degradation of pellets is mainly thought to be caused by coprophagy (ingestion of fecal pellets) by copepods, and especial...

Stage-specific mortality of Calanus finmarchicus, Pseudocalanus elongatus and Oithona similis on Fladen Ground, North Sea, during a spring bloom

We used Woods Population Surface Method to estimate stage-specific mortality rates for populations of Calanus finmarchicus, Pseudocalanus elongatus, and Oithona similis from abundance data obtained during the Fladen Ground Experiment (FLEX 1976) in the northern North Sea. Temperatures from the day and night depth distributions of each developmental stage were used to force temperature functions...

Biochemical composition of wild copepods, Acartia spinicauda and Oithona similis, from Parangipettai coastal waters in relation to environmental parameters.

Percentage composition of protein, lipid, carbohydrate and amino acids of copepods, Acartia spinicauda and Oithona similis collected from Parangipettai coastal waters were estimated following standard methodologies. Of the principal biochemical constituents, protein formed the major component followed bylipid and carbohydrate. Biochemical composition analysis of wild copepods indicated their nu...
